Abstract
This research project aims to explore the mediating effects of self-representation and others-representation in the relationship between childhood parenting attitudes and interpersonal problems amongst college students. The subjects of the study were 300 university students. A correlation analysis of the collected data was conducted and a structural equation model was used to reveal any mediating effects. The results of the study are as follows. First, the interpersonal problems of college students showed a significant and negative correlation with level of parental¡¯s care, self-representation, and othersrepresentation, and a significant and positive correlation with level of parental¡¯s overprotection. Second, the others-representation and self-representation were found to have a perfect mediating effect in their relationship with a mother¡¯s care, a father¡¯s overprotection, a mother¡¯s overprotection and interpersonal problems. In addition, the relationship between a father¡¯s care and interpersonal problems has been shown to have a partial mediating effect. Third, through self-representation, it was confirmed that the others-representation is a variable that indirectly affects interpersonal problems. Thus, self-representation is a very meaningful variable in the relationship between parenting attitudes and interpersonal problems.
This could serve as a basic resource and could prove to be useful for better understanding interpersonal problems and developing counseling programs for college students.
